The Sanctum of a Bloom
Two figures mourning their love, a sweet bite, condolences, a Boschian shell, paper clay, plaster-cast apples, carpeting, mannequin limbs
2025
The title for this work comes from a passage in Zora Neale Hurston's book Their Eyes Were Watching God. Janie watches a pear tree and glances at the bees, enjoying its fragrant beauty. At that exact moment, she realizes this arresting interaction is what love should be like; it is such a strong realization that it leaves her languid. This work depicts a brief encounter with this kind of love. One that’s secluded, lasting only for a moment; a false and tenderly secretive moment, a Boschian daydream.
